Social Media Policy

Purpose

The Bayonne Police Department (BPD) uses social media to provide timely and accurate information to the public, engage with the community, and promote public safety initiatives. This policy outlines the acceptable use of BPD’s social media profiles on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

Scope

This policy applies to all users of BPD’s social media platforms, including members of the public and BPD employees.

Policy

  1. General Guidelines
    • The BPD’s social media profiles are managed by authorized personnel to ensure consistent and appropriate content.
    • Information posted on BPD’s social media profiles is for public awareness and engagement purposes only.
    • The BPD reserves the right to remove content or restrict access to its social media profiles for violations of this policy.
  2. User Conduct
    • Users are expected to interact with BPD’s social media profiles in a respectful and constructive manner.
    • Prohibited content includes, but is not limited to:
      • Hate speech, harassment, or discriminatory remarks.
      • Obscene, pornographic, or sexually explicit material.
      • Threats of violence or incitement to violence.
      • Misinformation or false statements.
      • Personal attacks or defamatory comments.
      • Spam, advertising, or unauthorized solicitation.
  3. Comment Moderation
    • BPD monitors its social media profiles and may moderate comments to maintain a positive and safe online environment.
    • Comments may be hidden or deleted if they violate the User Conduct guidelines.
    • Users who repeatedly violate these guidelines may be banned or blocked from BPD’s social media profiles.
  4. Public Records
    • Communications via BPD’s social media profiles are considered public records and may be subject to disclosure under applicable public records laws.
    • Users should avoid sharing personal or confidential information on social media platforms.
  5. Employee Use of Social Media
    • BPD employees must adhere to the department’s code of conduct and other relevant policies when using social media.
    • Employees should not engage in discussions or share information related to BPD operations without authorization.
    • Personal use of social media by employees should not interfere with their job duties or reflect poorly on the BPD.
  6. Crisis Situations
    • During emergencies or crises, BPD may use its social media profiles to disseminate critical information quickly.
    • The public is encouraged to follow official updates and directives issued through BPD’s social media channels.
  7. Disclaimers
    • BPD’s social media profiles are not monitored 24/7. For emergencies, dial 911 or contact the BPD directly.
    • The BPD is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of external websites linked from its social media profiles.
