Report Animal Cruelty

**WARNING FROM THE BAYONNE POLICE DEPARTMENT**

Your Dog Can Die of Heat Stroke Within 15 Minutes

Each summer countless dogs and cats suffer needlessly and even die in cars that become unbearable ovens when it is hot outside.

DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN A PARKED CAR WHEN IT IS HOT OUTSIDE NOT EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME.

Neglect

Law requires pet owners provide the basic necessities to prevent suffering for their animal companions. Animals must receive:

  • Sufficient & adequate food

  • Continuous drinkable water

  • Proper shelter and protection from the weather

  • Medical care to prevent suffering

Other signs an animal may be suffering include: matted hair, overgrown nails, constant confinement in a crate, locked in a car on a hot day, or injuries that are not treated.

If you see an animal that doesn’t seem to be receiving proper care, please call the Bayonne Police Department immediately (201) 858-6900. You can remain anonymous.

Cruelty

NJ State Law characterizes cruelty as intentional behavior meant to harm or kill an animal including participating in dog fights; hitting, beating, kicking or abusing an animal; or any act that causes harm to a domestic animal.

Under New Jersey state law any person who inflicts unnecessary cruelty upon a living creature or who fails to provide their pet with proper shelter or protection from the weather is in violation of 4:22-17a. 1 and is subject to arrest and prosecution.

Fines from $250 – $5,000 and/or up six months in the county jail.
